The Case for Imperfect Home Styling

Published 3 months ago • 1 min read

Hello Reader,

Ok, true story. Staged homes and hotel rooms make me super anxious. As in, I feel like I might break out in hives.

Why? Am I that eccentric? Maybe.

But, after years of reflection, I've settled on the idea that really, the idea of something being too perfect just makes me uncomfortable.

I think, as humans, we're wired to love authenticity. This means asymmetry, imperfection, and unlikely beauty.

This is definitely not a new concept. Many cultures throughout history have embraced imperfections. But it can still feel counter intuitive to what we see out there...

“Wabi sabi is an intuitive response to beauty that reflects the true nature of life. Wabi sabi [Japanese concept] is an acceptance and appreciation of the impermanent, imperfect, and incomplete nature of everything.”
— Beth Kempton

So why wouldn't we bring this into the home as well?

How to embrace imperfect home styling:

  1. Include something old in every space
  2. Add natural elements (live edge wood, real sticks, rocks, etc.)
  3. Incorporate texture (rough surfaces, wool, woven shades, ...)
  4. Plants. All the plants (Real ones or dried botanicals because faux is the opposite of embracing imperfection...)
  5. Resist the urge to erase all the home quirks

Shop Patio Sources For this design, I imagined a late summer afternoon with a few good girlfriends gathered around. Ginger spritzers and folksy acoustic guitar...

Home Styling with Allisa tips & projects for an authentic home Hello Reader, Ok, I'll come out and say it - I'm sort of a stress ball right. Life has been coming at me hard and I'm using allll my strategies to deal. In addition to the usual, like therapy sessions, journaling, and my pitiful attempts at deep breathing - I also organize the hell out of my space. Tidy space, tidy mind - right? But, I admit, sometimes tackling organization can be downright overwhelming. So, in the spirit of...

Home Styling with Allisa tips & projects for an authentic home Hello Reader, In the last couple months, I'd had a whole host of contractors here. From kitchen cabinets to crawl spaces, there is work to do. And, I will be the first to admit, getting bids can be absolutely overwhelming. Whether it's just the sheer amount of time involved or staring at numbers you had no idea could be so big. (Um, excuse me sir, I think you added an extra zero there....) Well, after having worked on several...
