7 Ways to Add Texture to Home Decor and Why You Need To

Making Spaces

Hello Reader,

I will be the first one to tell you that when it comes to home decor, do what you love.

However.....sometimes, we're not exactly sure what we love. Like you might look at a room and think, hmmm, I like it, but it just feels off.

There are lots of reasons this might be (I love putting on my detective hat and figuring out why) but a majority of the time, a room needs more texture.

Or maybe just any texture at all.

This is the design element often overlooked in new builds or maybe the rooms where we kind of pick up random things as we go (guilty!).

What is texture? It's pretty much described as the surface of something - how it feels and how it looks.

Without much texture, homes feel cold, flat, one dimensional. Think: a dentist's lobby, a showroom, or the stock photo below.

Of course it's entirely possible to over do it with texture (also guilty!) but by adding texture we're creating a place with depth, interest, and comfort.

You know, like when you have on a cozy sweater and it's basically welcoming a hug!

Ways to Add Texture:

(I've added post links to explore more info on some of these)

These are all easy, simple ways to add more texture.

TIPS:

  1. Add a variety of texture. Not just all baskets!
  2. Use texture at various heights (floor, coffee level, and higher)
  3. No need to buy more stuff. Move around what you have or just consider texture next time you do buy something

So if there's a flat, one dimensional room in your home, look for ways to add these in and I'll be it instantly upgrades the cozy and authenticity factor!

white kitchen with rug and wood shelves

Making Spaces allisajacobs.com Hello Reader, So, a couple weeks back I turned 45. While aging has never bothered me, this year felt particularly monumental. Another year of experiences, battles hard fought, and lessons learned. It's always been kind of a badge of honor to think I made it this far. The lines in my face and gray in my hair tells a story that's just my own. And the same is true for our homes. It reminded me of this lovely quote from Patsy Stone (a character from a British...
