Window Covering Questions Asked & Answered!

Making Spaces

Hello Reader,

Coming to you a little under the weather but definitely cozy with a mug of tea, my kitty Gnocchi, and a lovely view. ☕

I thought it would be a good time to talk all things window coverings....

Today, I'm sharing my 3 favorite window options and answering some of your questions received through email!

1. Neutral Linen Curtains

I love, love, love neutral, linen curtains. (And by neutral I mean no bluish gray or yellowy cream but a gosh darn true neutral).

They filter light & provide texture – things most spaces need.

2. Woven Wood Shades

Woven wood shades are my all time favorites and make the cut as one of my top upgrades under $200!

You’ll find them in every home I’ve lived in and on almost any window someone lets me get my hands on.

They check off so many design boxes - warmth, texture, plus allow for privacy and natural light.

3. Keep It Bare

Plot twist!

Guess what, every window doesn’t need to be covered! For those who love minimalist, leaving windows naked is the way to go.

Also - I get this may not be practical in *every* climate and windows may need to be upgraded to make it possible, but still something to think about....

Common Questions:

  • What Window Treatments for Sliding Glass Doors?

Ooh, this can be a tricky one! I’ve found that linen curtains installed on one side opposite of door handle is functional and pretty.

  • What to Do With Weird Windows?

For those 80’s homes with oddly shaped windows (like mine!)– don’t bend yourself into a pretzel trying to figure it out, just leave them bare. You have my permission.

  • Are White Blinds Still in Style?

Well, I try to avoid the idea of trends and such, but I'd say white blinds are the tried & true classics.

That said, rooms with white blinds often feel stark (which is why I love wood shades) so add some texture and warmth with other decor if possible.

Making Spaces allisajacobs.com Hello Reader, I will be the first one to tell you that when it comes to home decor, do what you love. However.....sometimes, we're not exactly sure what we love. Like you might look at a room and think, hmmm, I like it, but it just feels off. There are lots of reasons this might be (I love putting on my detective hat and figuring out why) but a majority of the time, a room needs more texture. Or maybe just any texture at all. This is the design element often...

kitchen shelves with fall decor

Making Spaces allisajacobs.com Hello Reader, Ok, I'm a summer girl at heart, but I love some good cozy weather. And this morning, fall came in all its glory - a chilly fog leading to golden sunshine. Time to bust out those cardigans... and fall home decor! And if you've been here for a good bit, you probably know I'm a big fan of subtle + natural seasonal decor. No need to rush out and buy or store tons of stuff. So today, I thought I'd share some autumn shelf pics I styled previously- using...

white kitchen with rug and wood shelves

Making Spaces allisajacobs.com Hello Reader, So, a couple weeks back I turned 45. While aging has never bothered me, this year felt particularly monumental. Another year of experiences, battles hard fought, and lessons learned. It's always been kind of a badge of honor to think I made it this far. The lines in my face and gray in my hair tells a story that's just my own. And the same is true for our homes. It reminded me of this lovely quote from Patsy Stone (a character from a British...
