Mixing Old & New - Home Decor Wisdom

Making Spaces

Hello Reader,

So, a couple weeks back I turned 45. While aging has never bothered me, this year felt particularly monumental.

Another year of experiences, battles hard fought, and lessons learned. It's always been kind of a badge of honor to think I made it this far.

The lines in my face and gray in my hair tells a story that's just my own.

And the same is true for our homes. It reminded me of this lovely quote from Patsy Stone (a character from a British sitcom):

Besides just being charming, this quote reminds me to keep our space authentic.

We don't need everything to be shiny & brand new. Because, where's the story in that?

How to Apply This Quote:

I'm already a big fan of contrast in general - and to me this means including a healthy mix of old & new.

When I style a space, I try to include at least one old item. In the kitchen above - I used a vintage rug, antique side cabinet, and some thrifted shelf decor.

Using this mix adds so much authenticity and comfort. Otherwise, it would feel really sterile and basic.

So if you have a space that feels "off" or maybe a little flat, consider adding one of these:

  • Family heirlooms
  • Vintage rugs
  • Antique paintings
  • Thrifted decor

Making Spaces allisajacobs.com Hello Reader, I will be the first one to tell you that when it comes to home decor, do what you love. However.....sometimes, we're not exactly sure what we love. Like you might look at a room and think, hmmm, I like it, but it just feels off. There are lots of reasons this might be (I love putting on my detective hat and figuring out why) but a majority of the time, a room needs more texture. Or maybe just any texture at all.
