Week 2: Bedroom Decor Series - How to Deal with Room Size

Making Spaces

Hello Reader,

I'm writing this from a lovely vacation spot in Central Oregon and since I've been able to catch up (a bit!) on sleep, this new bedroom decor series is the perfect timing for me.

Last week we talked about layout (big takeaway: focus on functionality + balance over perfect symmetry). Today, we're talking about room size.

Whether yours is too small, too big, or just right - I've got some serious tips for you.

Plus, a huge thank you for all of you who submitted YOUR own bedrooms for feedback. See below for two reader spaces & my honest design input!

Room Size

Room size is a super common challenge for decorating a bedroom. Bigger is not always better and smaller gets out of hand real quick.

I’ve handled my share of bedrooms – with a tiny, awkwardly shaped room being one of my favorites. And now, a large open room presents a whole host of new challenges.

What's the best way to deal with this challenge?

Proportion

Proportion is important no matter what size the room - and it's often a missed opportunity for bedrooms. So, if you take away nothing else, let it be this:

Select furniture that is on scale with the room size.

This can be a heartbreaker, I know.

But if you’ve got a teeny tiny room, chances are you’ll need to let go of those California King dreams. And if you’ve got a massive space, a full bed is going to feel like a raft in the ocean.

Keep this in mind for other pieces too, like dressers and the bed frame.

Small space? Go with a minimal steel frame. Bigger? Choose something that adds height and dimension.

Tips for Smaller Rooms:

  • Group items for functionality
  • Use multi functional furniture like a bed with built in shelves or a bench with storage
  • Look for more minimally designed furniture

Tips for Larger Rooms:

  • Create zones such reading nooks, dressing areas, writing corners to break it up
  • Avoid filling the space just because it's there
  • Use a rug under bed

Real Bedroom Spaces:

First, let me say that I am SO honored many of you trust me enough to share your personal spaces with me. Thank you!

As mentioned, last week, I'll offer 3 design ideas for each space. Throughout this series, I'll share additional reader bedrooms.

Space #1:

(Reader mentioned headboard will be changing)

  • Use a neutral, soft rug to define space and 'ground' furniture
  • Add height with tall plant in corner and taller bedside lamps
  • Mix up shapes by adding round artwork or baskets and rounded lamp bases

Reader Space #2:

  • Opt for a less tall, & more proportionate art print above bed
  • Soften existing lines with a tall plant in corner & woven bench cover
  • If considering new furniture, look for more minimal designs to avoid competing with room trim (might also help if space feels tight)

This is the design element often...
