Week 5: Bedroom Decor Series - Above Bed Decor

Making Spaces

Hello Reader,

All right friends, here we are in the final week of the Bedroom Challenge Series! (Missed previous weeks? No worries, l'll link them all at the end....)

Today, I'm talking about one of the biggest bedroom challenges - what in the heck to put above the bed?

(And, if your bedroom is feeling "off" - you might want to reconsider your current choice, as this one thing makes a huge impact!)

Remember - read to the end to see actual reader bedroom spaces and my decor tips for them!

Above Bed Decor

This topic falls into the "but it seems like it should be so simple category." Like, it can't be that hard right?

But when faced with a decision, it somehow is.

However, I've got some quick tips!

When deciding what decor to use above the bed, first decide what the space NEEDS. (Not just what you want or saw on pinterest).

This is a good tip for any space but especially helpful here. The little chart above can help get things going. ☝️

Real Bedroom Spaces:

First, let me say that I am SO honored many of you trust me enough to share your personal spaces with me.

Today, I'm sharing two different reader bedrooms along with some styling suggestions.

Bedroom #1:

  • Simplify: With such lovely details like trim work and wall molding (and that headboard, stunning!) - keep other decor simple and streamlined

  • Raise Curtains: Meet the height by raising the curtain rod a bit and no need to puddle curtains in a tight space

  • Functional & Simple Decor: with so many lovely details, focus on simple functional decor like baskets on table for smaller items, hanging mirror, books on nightstand

Bedroom #2:

  • Add contrast: Black curtain rods (love the black trim on the light!)
  • Simplify textures & prints: consider editing multiple prints/textures such as more simple artwork, sheets, fuzzy pillows - to keep eyes gently moving
  • Lighten up - if paint or flooring is in the future, consider lighter colors (will also help with contrast)

Making Spaces allisajacobs.com Hello Reader, I will be the first one to tell you that when it comes to home decor, do what you love. However.....sometimes, we're not exactly sure what we love. There are lots of reasons this might be (I love putting on my detective hat and figuring out why) but a majority of the time, a room needs more texture. Or maybe just any texture at all. This is the design element often...
