Home Design Tips: Making the Most of What You Have

Making Spaces

Hello Reader,

You ever feel like you're so great at giving advice...but not always the best at applying it to yourself? ๐Ÿ™‹

Yeah, so that totally applies to me.

Whether we're talking about relationships, time management, or, ahem, home styling I don't always take my own medicine.

Let's take my own home for instance. You might know I purchased this lovely house last summer after my divorce.

It has lovely natural light but is rocking some MAJOR 80's vibes.

Sure, I painted over the maroon walls and added some modern plants out front but for the last 12 months I've looked around and thought, "I'll address that once I start the remodel."

Well, guess what? It's been a year and there's no remodel. The carpet is still there. The peeling oak cabinets stare at me every morning and I can't help to shudder at the beige ceilings.

Recently, I teamed up with Wayfair to style some of my "in between" spaces including this bedroom:

3 Tips To Make the Most of What You've Got

  1. Buy Carefully - this is a big one! When we're in home decor limbo people tend to buy stuff and more stuff. I say, buy less! Instead, buy items with a big impact that will stand the test of time
  2. Think Ahead - Know that carpet won't stay there forever? Or hoping to paint someday? Invest in things or make changes that will work for now and later on.
  3. Consider What the Space Needs (not what you want!) - this applies to any situation but super important when in a decor limbo. For example, the space above was so bland (creamy white walls + greige carpet) - it needed some contrast! I achieved this with headboard & black lamps.

So, will this bedroom have moody black walls and modern flooring someday? Yes! But someday is not now and I'll make the most of it while I can! ๐Ÿ–ค

Making Spaces allisajacobs.com Hello Reader, I will be the first one to tell you that when it comes to home decor, do what you love. However.....sometimes, we're not exactly sure what we love. Like you might look at a room and think, hmmm, I like it, but it just feels off. There are lots of reasons this might be (I love putting on my detective hat and figuring out why) but a majority of the time, a room needs more texture. Or maybe just any texture at all. This is the design element often...
